Golden Retriever Guide From the Experts
Most of us seek our first Golden Retriever because we are attracted to his physical appearance, reputation as a family dog and overall good temperament. The majorities of Goldens live up to these expectations and usually exceed them. The behavior traits described are the reactions of a typical Golden Retriever.

Unlike some breeds, which tend to be one person or single family oriented, A Golden shares his affections freely with many. He will form an especially strong bond with the person who might be his primary trainer or whoever spends the most time with him, but never to the exclusion of others.

This trait, along with a Golden's overt friendliness, is a deterrent to someone seeking a dog that is protective or wary of strangers. Typically, Goldens do not make good guard dogs. They are generally not excessive barkers, though they will alert their owners to unusual incidents such as strange sounds or intruders.

While dogs of other breeds might bark, growl and even threaten a stranger, a Golden is most likely to bark and wag his tail in greeting.

Golden naturally seem to trust humans. This is why they are among the favorite clients of veterinarians, dog groomers and obedience instructors. Along with trust is the inherent ability to forgive. Many owners could learn from their Goldens.

A Golden will take a normal correction, given fairly, in stride. He will learn from it and continue to like and respect the person who administered it. A traumatic incident will not affect a Golden for any length of time. He will go on with life, tail wagging.

It is this resiliency and an ability to adapt to new situations that makes the Golden ideal for so many different purposes. Dogs used in guiding the blind, assisting the deaf, providing therapy to old or infirm people must be able to enter any situation or environment and continue to put the tasks of the job ahead of any other distractions.

Here are the basic characteristics of the Golden Retriever.
- Loves people
- Very trustworthy
- Easily adapt to new situation
- Highly trainable
- Eager retriever, happy to carry things around
- Friendly, outgoing and exuberant
